Journey Lane Installation & Setup
Journey Lane installation and setup guide
Theme 1.1.34 · Journey Lane Companion 1.1.0. This guide covers installation, the optional demo, menus, destination archives, social profiles, forms and updates.
Before you start
Use a self-hosted WordPress installation, or a hosted WordPress plan that permits uploading themes and plugins. The package declares WordPress 6.4+ and PHP 7.4+. Use a currently supported PHP release compatible with your plugins. Local functional checks used WordPress 7.1.3 / PHP 8.3 and selected checks used WordPress 6.4. PHP 7.4 is a declared minimum, not a separately tested runtime. Back up an existing site’s database, uploads, theme files and settings. A fresh staging installation is the clearest way to reproduce the demo.
Understand your download
journey-lane-1.1.34.zip: the installable theme.journey-lane-companion-1.1.0.zip: the installable companion plugin.- Installation instructions, source-code license and image credits.
If you download the complete buyer bundle, extract that outer ZIP on your computer first. Upload the two inner ZIPs through their respective WordPress screens. Uploading the complete bundle as a theme causes a missing-style.css error.
Install the theme
- Sign in to WordPress as an administrator.
- Open Appearance → Themes → Add New Theme → Upload Theme.
- Select
journey-lane-1.1.34.zip, click Install Now, then Activate. - Open Appearance → Themes and confirm that Journey Lane is active and reports version 1.1.34.
The theme can display normal WordPress posts without the companion. Install the companion to add the destination taxonomy and demo importer. No Elementor, WPBakery or separate icon-font package is required for the theme layouts.
Install Journey Lane Companion
- Open Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin.
- Select
journey-lane-companion-1.1.0.zip. - Click Install Now and Activate. Confirm version 1.1.0 under Plugins.
- Keep the companion active while using destination collections. It stores destination content separately from the theme’s presentation.
Import the optional demo
- Open Tools → Journey Lane Demo.
- Read Environment & readiness. Resolve reported theme, taxonomy, upload-directory or WebP image-processing errors first.
- On a fresh demo site, select all three assignment options: Set Home and Journal as the homepage/posts page; Assign the new demo menu to Primary and Footer; and Set demo author portrait and featured posts.
- On an existing website, leave any assignment option unchecked if you want to retain that setting. Importing the content alone does not assign the imported navigation or homepage.
- Click Start Journey Lane Demo Import. Keep the screen open. The browser processes saved steps in sequence rather than one large server request.
- Wait until the dashboard reports a verified complete import. Review the created stories, pages, destinations and photographs.
The demo includes 12 travel stories and bundled travel photographs, plus categories, destination terms, pages and a dedicated menu. Import duration depends on hosting and image processing; there is no fixed completion-time promise. The importer reuses its tracked demo content when continuing. Do not use WordPress Tools → Import or a third-party XML importer for this bundled demo.
If an import pauses or fails
Read the current stage, image name, error and Recent import activity. Use Retry / Continue Import or Resume import after resolving the cause. If a request times out, reload the importer and inspect saved progress before retrying: the server may still be processing. An active processing lock can remain for up to five minutes after a terminated request. Avoid clicking repeatedly or starting a second tab. Ask the host about upload permissions, WebP support and PHP resource limits if the same image or checkpoint repeatedly fails. Increasing limits is host-specific; do not change server files blindly.
The available photo-repair action is intended for tracked demo images. The restore-settings action restores importer-assigned settings only where they have not subsequently been changed. It does not roll back arbitrary customer edits or remove an entire existing website. Retain your backup.
Set the homepage and journal
- Open Settings → Reading.
- For the imported layout, choose A static page; select Home as Homepage and Journal as Posts page.
- Save Changes. Keep Home and Journal as two different published pages.
- The homepage’s featured stories and journal sections are controlled under Appearance → Customize → Featured Homepage; they are theme-driven sections, rather than a drag-and-drop page-builder canvas.
If you prefer the normal posts feed, choose Your latest posts and review the result. Imported sample content is optional.
Assign and edit navigation
- Open Appearance → Menus and select the imported Journey Lane menu, or create your own.
- Add published pages, categories or destination archives. Remove duplicate Home entries and links you do not intend to show.
- Assign the menu to Primary Navigation and save.
- Create or select a suitable footer menu, assign Footer Navigation and save. The footer may also use the separately configured discovery links.
- Visit the site. Check every link, nested submenu, mobile drawer and tablet navigation. The drawer layout is used at widths up to 1024px.
Customize the design
Open Appearance → Customize. Journey Lane is a classic theme: use the Customizer for theme settings and the WordPress block editor for post/page content. The theme-specific areas include:
- Design & Branding: palette, typography settings, widths, spacing and presentation.
- Header & Navigation: header arrangement, top bar, navigation spacing and sticky behavior.
- Featured Homepage: intro text, featured posts, journal presentation and destination sections.
- Photography Page: gallery content and display options.
- Blog & Archives: grid/list display, columns, excerpts, metadata and sidebars.
- Single Articles: reading layout, table of contents, progress, sharing, author area and related stories.
- Author & Sidebar: author presentation and editorial/widget sidebar mode.
- Footer: brand, discovery links, destinations, forms, legal links and bottom bar.
- Social Profiles & Sharing: profile URLs, icon appearance and placement.
Use Site Identity to upload your logo and site icon. Click Publish to save changes. Check the homepage, one article and an archive after each major change; a setting may apply only when its related section is enabled.
Set up the right sidebar and social icons
The default editorial sidebar shows the author, recent stories and categories. Use the sidebar content option under Author & Sidebar to select the editorial presentation or WordPress widgets. A custom widget sidebar follows the widgets and ordering you choose.
- In Social Profiles & Sharing, enter full URLs for your real accounts, beginning with
https://. - Enable the sidebar profile placement and edit its heading, such as Follow the journey.
- Select the available icon style. Empty or invalid profile URLs do not produce buttons.
- For a custom widget sidebar, open Appearance → Widgets → Editorial Sidebar and add the Journey Lane Social Profiles widget. Use global accounts or configure that widget’s own URLs and style.
Profile buttons open your accounts. Article share buttons let readers share a story; they are separate features. Social icons do not create an Instagram feed, fetch follower counts or connect account APIs.
Publish stories and destinations
Use Posts → Add New to write a story. Add a title, content, excerpt, featured image, category and author. With Companion active, assign destinations in the post editor. Under Posts → Destinations, add a destination name, slug, description and destination photo. Use the Destinations — Explorer page template for an overview of collections.
Published posts assigned to a destination appear in that destination’s archive. An empty destination may be hidden depending on the relevant setting. If an archive returns 404, keep Companion active and open Settings → Permalinks → Save Changes once to refresh rewrite rules. Check for another plugin using the same destination URL slug.
Use the page templates
In the WordPress page editor, choose the appropriate Template: Destinations — Explorer, Photography — Journal Gallery, Contact — Editorial, Blog — Editorial Grid, Blog — Editorial List, the About template, or Full Width Editorial. Publish the page and add its real permalink to a menu where appropriate. Set Photography Page options in the Customizer for its gallery source.
Configure contact and newsletter features
Under Footer • Newsletter & Forms, set a public contact email or a valid shortcode from an installed form plugin. The shortcode must be registered by an active plugin. Configure newsletter signup through your chosen provider/plugin and place its working form shortcode in the newsletter option.
Journey Lane does not provide a newsletter delivery service or guarantee email delivery. Its own layouts do not require a paid form plugin. If you use a form, configure its recipients, consent and spam controls, then execute a real submission and verify receipt. The theme never publishes the administrative email automatically. Hide optional form sections until their integrations are configured.
Replace the sample identity and images
Replace the demo author, portrait, stories and sample information with your own. Upload optimized images, add meaningful alt text and review crops in cards and featured stories. The bundled WebP travel photographs have separate Unsplash licensing; see ASSET-LICENSES.md for sources and credits. Theme/plugin code is GPL-2.0-or-later; demo photographs do not become GPL merely by being included. Do not sell the images as a standalone stock-photo collection. Replace demo imagery where your use requires different rights.
Search, SEO and launch checks
Use the header search button, type a real story keyword and submit the form or press Enter. Check both matching and no-result searches. WordPress search looks at published content; the theme does not install a remote search service. Use one SEO plugin if you need metadata, XML sitemap or additional schema management. Avoid duplicate SEO plugins.
Before launching, test desktop, tablet and phone in portrait/landscape: header, search, menu close button, nested menus, sidebar, destination pages, article images, footer and every contact/social link. Check that forms reach their destination. Review your own content with image compression and caching enabled. Performance varies with hosting, plugins, content and photographs; no fixed score or ranking is promised.
Update safely
- Back up the site and test the update on staging.
- Upload the new theme ZIP through Appearance → Themes → Add New Theme → Upload Theme; review WordPress’s replacement screen and replace the installed theme.
- If a companion update is provided, replace it separately through Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin.
- Do not reimport the demo to apply a theme update.
- Clear page, host/CDN and browser caches. Confirm the new version and repeat navigation/search checks.
Use a child theme for PHP/template customizations. Direct edits inside Journey Lane are overwritten during replacement. Customizer settings and normal WordPress content are stored in the database, but still belong in your backup.
Troubleshooting
- Missing style.css: upload the inner theme ZIP, not the buyer bundle or companion plugin.
- No menu or unexpected pages: assign a saved menu to Primary Navigation; edit auto-listed pages or select the importer menu.
- Demo looks incomplete: verify import status and the three assignment choices, Reading settings, featured images and Companion activation.
- Search or menu behaves like an old version: confirm theme 1.1.34; clear caches and review JavaScript delay/minification exclusions for
assets/js/theme.js. - No social buttons: enter valid real account URLs, enable the intended placement and check whether the sidebar is using widgets.
- Unexpected sidebar: choose editorial mode or review widgets in Editorial Sidebar.
- Missing destination: assign a published story and a photo; review empty-destination visibility and refresh permalinks once.
- Blank form: activate the form plugin that registers the configured shortcode and check that shortcode’s output.
- Upload limit exceeded: ask your hosting provider to adjust its upload limits, or upload the extracted theme/plugin folders using its file manager/SFTP to the correct WordPress directories.
